Neutropenia means a low neutrophil count in circulating white blood cells and is defined as:

  • A neutrophil count of ≤0.5 x 109/L
  • Temperature ≥38.5°C OR two consecutive readings of ≥38.0°C for 2 hours

Causes

There are a variety of causes, including:

  • Bone marrow infiltration with malignancy
  • Chemotherapy (cytotoxics and immunosuppressants)
  • Infections, e.g. HIV
  • Congenital reasons
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
