The focus of this session is appraisal, appraising performance and the appraisal discussion. For medical professionals, appraisal is now a formal process based on national guidelines which aims to give feedback on performance, to chart their continuing progress and to identify development needs. This session focuses however not just on doctors, but on the general principles of appraisal for all health professionals. It highlights relevant aspects relating to how appraisal fits into improving patient care and supporting continuing professional development (CPD), as well as noting some of the specific tasks and activities relating to appraisal in different stages of training or career, contexts and professions.
