- This session is for the specialist audience of trainee and practicing counsellors working with children and young persons. The session aims to provide a background on how to become congruent, acknowledging and working through contextual and internal blocks and how to maintain a commitment to genuineness. The session gives an understanding of what it means to engage in an authentic way with children and young people, involving self-awareness and communication skills techniques. The conveyance of congruence is explained in terms of how body language and words can be used to show authentic presence. Challenges such as client blocks and opportunities to consider self-disclosure are discussed. Video examples are given to provide examples of congruence being conveyed in practice and allow participants to learn how they can assess their own competence with conveying congruence.
