The Six Steps Approach to Workforce Planning is an introduction to the process of workforce planning. It works in a similar way to the PRINCE2 approach to project management – the approach outlines how to go about developing a workforce plan whether you are planning for a team or a trust, for covering a short period of time (maybe the summer holidays) right through to a workforce strategy covering multiple years.

You will be introduced to the concept of workforce demand (how many staff you need) and workforce supply (who you currently have access to and who you might have access to in the future). Where these are not in balance, there are a range of options or ‘actions’ to help bring demand and supply back into balance. To develop a robust workforce plan you need to identify and work with stakeholders, and to identify what is driving change or a need to change your workforce.
