Supervision
Session information
- Title:
- Supervision
- Description:
-
Supervision can be defined in many ways, but is essentially a professional conversation where practice is reviewed and possibilities for change are explored. These professional conversations may take place in a one-to-one or group environment. Supervision varies in terms of both its physical proximity and whether it is more ‘hands on’ or indirectly related to immediate patient care. For example, when supervising a student performing a practical procedure for the first time, supervision will probably be nearby and direct whereas, as learners become more ‘expert’, supervision may take the form of being available for discussion or support at a later date. Supervision is a feature of medical, dental and health professions’ education with an increasing expectation that it is an element of every qualified clinician’s practice. Supervision aims to foster reflective practice, ultimately improving patient safety and the quality of patient care.
This session considers the role of supervision in supporting students, trainees and colleagues. Different conceptions and definitions of supervision in healthcare are explored and approaches to supervision are considered. - Hierarchy:
